A Napoli ho trovato la bellezza, quella vera, di cui ormai non si parla più.
La regola è che nulla a Napoli esiste come altrove. C’è tanto splendore, tanta magnificenza. Una città dai mille volti e dalle infinite anime. Viva. Colorata. Contraddittoria. Romantica. Inafferrabile. Insicura. Sorprendente. Fa sognare di paradisi e armonie perdute. Qui il passato sembra che non sia mai passato. Il fascino di questa città è celato proprio nella sua antichità, sì perché Napoli, con i suoi 3000 anni di storia, è una delle città più antiche dell’ Occidente. Ben poco si sa sulle vicende storiche che hanno caratterizzato la sua origine. Ma come tutte le città dell’antichità, che vantano tradizioni mitologiche e leggende sulla sua origine, anche la nascita di Napoli è celata dal suggestivo velo del mito e della leggenda.
Nel corso dei secoli ha rappresentato la quintessenza dei valori storici, culturali e artistici del Mezzogiorno d’Italia. Ne è conferma il rapporto privilegiato che, a lungo, la grande città intrattenne con i colti viaggiatori del Grand Tour per i quali costituiva una tappa irrinunciabile e amatissima.
Napoli è un mondo, uno spettacolo teatrale, un museo all’aria aperta. Il valore monumentale e culturale del centro storico di Napoli, dichiarato dall’ UNESCO Patrimonio dell’Umanità, è inestimabile. Dall’epoca greco-romana, passando per le dominazioni bizantine e normanne, i regni successivi adornano la città di capolavori del gotico e del barocco intessuti in una scenografia multiforme che accanto ai vicoli popolari offre palazzi lussuosi e templi ricchi di suggestione.
Qualcuno disse “Dimmi come vedi Napoli e ti dirò chi sei”, è verissimo. Chi ha l’occhio giusto scopre nelle anfrattuosità e anche nel degrado del suo tessuto urbano tante insospettate meraviglie.
L’immagine più classica di Napoli si coglie dal lungomare con il golfo racchiuso tra due bracci di terra, le isole di Capri e di Ischia in lontananza, il cono del Vesuvio e la città intera che sembra quasi protesa verso il mare. Lo sguardo si allarga salendo a Posillipo, sul promontorio che separa il golfo di Napoli da quello di Pozzuoli: qui si potrà ammirare uno dei panorami più belli del mondo…

In Naples I found beauty, the real one, the one people do not consider anymore.The rule is that in Naples nothing exists as it does anywhere else. There is much splendor and magnificence. Naples has thousands of facets and infinite souls. Naples is alive. Colored. Contradictory. Romantic. Elusive. Insecure. Amazing.
It makes you dream about paradises and lost harmonies. Here the past seems not to have passed at all.The charm of this city is to be found in its antiquities and indeed Naples, with its 3.000 years of history, is one of the most ancient cities of the West. The historical origins of the city are not well-known.
But just like all the ancient cities, having their origins entangled with mythological traditions and legends, also the birth of Naples is strictly linked with fascinating myths. Throughout the centuries, Naples has embodied the quintessence of the historical, cultural and artistic values of the South of Italy. This is also confirmed by the long-lasting close relationship with the well-educated travelers of the Grand Tour for whom Naples was a beloved and inalienable city to be visited. Naples is a stage show, it is a world in itself, an en plein air museum.
The monumental and cultural value of the historical center of Naples, declared world heritage by the UNESCO, is priceless.
From the Ancient Greek and Roman Empires to the Byzantine and Norman ones, the city has always been adorned with Gothic and Baroque masterpieces intertwined with a multiform scenography that offers luxurious palaces and evocative temples, along with popular areas. Somebody once said: “Tell me how you see Naples and I will tell you who you are”, this is absolutely true.
Who looks intently at the city can find a lot of unsuspected wonders even if hidden by urban decay.
The most traditional image of Naples is represented by the gulf surrounded by two strips of land with the Capri and Ischia Islands in the distance, the Vesuvio cone and the entire city that seems to be stretched out over the sea.
Looking up at Posillipo and at the promontory that divides the gulf of Naples from Pozzuoli, people can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the world… Stanislao Nievo said: «If there was a capital of the soul, placed between East and West, feelings and philosophy… then Naples would be it»
